Hard Metal Machining in 3DEXPERIENCE R2017x

In versions before 3DEXPERIENCE R2017x, the option to select multiple radial cuts with a ‘concentric’ tool path style (used for Hard Metal cutting) was present but the user had to juggle the number of cuts required along with the depth of the radial cuts to make it clear the area required. This could be a slightly tedious (not to mention time consuming) task and whilst the result was perfectly usable, sometimes the distribution of cuts was not as smooth as desired.

At the picture below you can see how the tool path would look in R2016x and V5.

In this example, the user has to set the number of cuts required manually (trial and error), and the distribution of cuts at the beginning and end is less than optimal. However, with the introduction of a new ‘Soft Boundary’ feature in 3DEXPERIENCE R2017x (but currently not in V5), the ‘hit and miss’ method for setting the number of cuts has gone and an improvement in the distribution of cuts can be seen.

The picture below demonstrate how to activate this new feature.

By selecting the Soft Boundary function and selecting one or more edges, the system will determine the number of cuts required to clear the area, plus the distribution of cuts will be more sympathetic to the conditions of Hard Metal Machining.
